WHY WE ARE ECO-FRIENDLY & SUSTAINABLE
People are recognizing the fact that businesses can play a large role in making our world more SUSTAINABLE. However, the supplement industry still has a lot of room for improvement in this area. Which is why we are looking to be a leader in this industry with our sustainability efforts.
Nearly all supplement companies still use virgin plastic containers to package their supplements in. Meaning they are producing a lot of new plastic for their products. In 2019, production and incineration of plastic contributed 850 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere! There is also 150 million tons of plastic in the oceans, and another 8 million tons are being added every year. This is equivalent to a garbage truck completely full of plastic being dumped into the ocean EVERY MINUTE! At this rate, there will be more plastic in the oceans than there are fish by 2050.
Not only is this harmful to marine animals, but it affects us as humans too. Plastic takes hundreds of years to degrade, and it NEVER fully breaks down. It breaks down into microplastics, which end up in the marine life we eat and the water we drink. In fact, a study in 2017 showed that 94% of tap water samples in the U.S. are contaminated with microplastics. Overall, producing virgin plastic has numerous negative consequences, and it's necessary that we DECREASE the amount of virgin plastic we create.
This is why we have chosen to package our supplements in 100% Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) material! This is a better solution because it requires ZERO petroleum to create new plastic, and it promotes the reuse of plastic that has already been produced. A reduction in virgin plastic production means LESS greenhouse gas emissions! A study in 2008 showed recycling PET and HDPE plastic containers and bottles prevented 2.1 million tons of CO2, an amount comparable to taking 360,000 cars off the road. That includes all the collecting, recycling, and remanufacturing of the plastic too. Which is why we are looking into the future, and not the past, when it comes to our packaging.
But that wasn't enough for us. Did you know delivering packages produces millions and millions of greenhouse gases every single year? That is why we OFFSET all carbon emissions produced by delivering your products to your home! For every order, we DONATE to a company named Pachama to offset the calculated amount of CO2 emitted by each individual delivery. Right now, our contributions are funding the Acapa - Bajo Mira y Frontera Forest Conservation Project in Colombia to protect against deforestation of the natural rainforest in the area. It is certified by the Verified Carbon Standard Program to make sure the carbon emissions are truly offset. Now we may not have perfect solutions, but it is certainly better than doing nothing at all like most other companies in this industry. Plus, these are just the first steps of many. We will always be looking for more ways to make our carbon footprint as low as possible.
Why do we do all of this? Because we want our business to still be around helping people for generations to come. And if we want that to even be a possibility, then we need to do OUR part in keeping our planet sustainable. We can all make a positive difference, businesses and individuals alike.
